Capture on the go with WhatsApp

Send voice notes, text decisions, and query your vault from WhatsApp — with strict local privacy boundaries you control.

For: WhatsApp-first teams and consultants capturing decisions on the move

If you want to capture commitments, voice notes, and meeting decisions directly from WhatsApp without installing an extra mobile app — this is for you.

Taking out your laptop to log a quick thought, task, or meeting decision while on the move is inconvenient — the 20 seconds it takes to open WhatsApp instead is usually the difference between a decision getting logged and it not. WhatsApp is already on your phone, but business users need absolute confidence that private chat histories won’t leak or be scanned indiscriminately.

Dori pairs with WhatsApp using a local QR-code connection — the exact same mechanism used by WhatsApp Web. Your desktop Mac manages the session locally. You choose the exact listening scope: keep it restricted strictly to 1 messages between you and Dori, or enable group mentions so Dori only wakes up when explicitly tagged.

What’s actually driving this, and what it costs

Session management, message receiving, and speech-to-text audio transcription run locally on your Mac’s background engine, at zero API cost. Extracting key decisions and linking named contacts to your vault is the part that uses your connected AI provider.

Strict Privacy & Security Guarantees

Because business communication contains sensitive financial and client information, Dori enforces four strict security boundaries:

  1. Local Session Credentials: Pairing credentials and session keys are stored locally on your Mac (dori-engine). No third-party SaaS server holds your WhatsApp login.
  2. End-to-End Encryption Maintained: Messages travel via WhatsApp’s standard end-to-end encryption directly to your local Mac. Decryption happens locally inside your Dori app.
  3. “Just Me” Default Mode: Out of the box, Dori only reads messages sent directly to your Dori contact number. It cannot read your other personal or group chats.
  4. Group Mention Triggers: If you add Dori to a team group chat, set the listening policy to Mention Only. Dori ignores all general chat and only processes messages where @Dori is explicitly tagged.

Quick setup (one time, about two minutes)

Open WhatsApp Connections

In Dori Desktop, navigate to Settings → Connections → WhatsApp.

Scan the QR Code

Click Connect to display a QR code. Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings → Linked Devices, and scan the code.

Choose Listening Mode

Select Just me for private 1 captures, or select Groups to specify team chats with mention-only rules.

Real-World Workflows

1. The Walk-and-Talk Voice Note

After a coffee meeting with a partner, record a 20-second voice memo in your 1 chat with Dori: “Agreed with Marcus on a 10% volume discount for Q4. Follow up by Friday.” Dori transcribes the audio, tags Marcus, creates an action item, and appends it to Marcus’s account note.

2. Group Chat Decision Logging

In a project team group chat, send: “@Dori record decision: We are postponing the database migration to Q4 due to client launch timelines.” Dori parses the tagged message, extracts the decision, and logs it under the active Project folder in your vault while ignoring un-tagged chatter.
